Friesian-type horses are commonly linked with medieval cavalry. Horses used by armored riders needed strength, balance, and the ability to move under a substantial load. The historical Friesian was smaller and more compact than many modern examples, but it was valued as a capable mount.

From carriage horse to trotter and farm horse

As firearms and organized infantry reduced the military importance of heavy cavalry, Friesians found new work. They became carriage horses, road trotters, and lighter agricultural horses. Trotting competitions were popular in Friesland, and speed at the trot was useful both for sport and for practical travel.


By the 19th century, however, the breed faced serious pressure. Specialized trotters could be faster. Heavier draft breeds could perform more demanding agricultural work. In 1879, breeders and supporters established the Friesch Paarden-Stamboek, now known as the Koninklijke Vereniging Het Friesch Paarden-Stamboek, or KFPS. Friesians have a recognized predisposition to a characteristic form of aortic rupture. The aorta is the major artery carrying blood away from the heart. A tear may cause internal bleeding or create an abnormal connection between the aorta and pulmonary artery.


Signs may include sudden collapse or death, pain, sweating, rapid heart rate, breathing difficulty, poor performance, or signs resembling colic. Research has found structural and mechanical differences in the Friesian aorta, but the full biological explanation is still being studied.


There is no simple owner screening test that can rule out all risk. Unexplained collapse, severe distress, or sudden cardiovascular signs require immediate veterinary attention.


Retained placenta

Friesian mares are particularly predisposed to retained fetal membranes after foaling. Normally, the placenta should be expelled completely within about three hours. Retention of the whole placenta or even a small piece can lead to metritis, endotoxemia, laminitis, and death.

Chronic progressive lymphedema, or CPL, is a serious condition seen in several feathered breeds, including Friesians. Impaired lymphatic drainage causes progressive swelling, skin thickening, folds, nodules, and recurrent infections of the lower legs. Heavy hair can hide early changes.

For the right rider or driver, a well-selected Friesian can be an excellent partner for dressage, carriage work, exhibitions, and recreational riding. The soundest choice is based on the complete horse, not the silhouette. Training, temperament, conformation, medical history, and suitability for the intended job matter far more than a long mane or an impressive trot.
